The illustration helps imagine the tabernacle and its furnishings that the LORD commanded the Israelites to make in Exodus 27-28. One verse stood out to me as I read about the high priest's garments. After mentioning the turban and its gold plate inscribed with HOLY TO THE LORD, God says about the high priest:
He will bear the guilt involved in the sacred gifts the Israelites consecrate, whatever their gifts may be (Exodus 28:38).
Even in the sacrifices that the Israelites offered, there would be guilt. Sin contaminates everything we do.
The High Priest foreshadowed one who was to come, one who would be HOLY TO THE LORD through perfect obedience to God, one who could bear the burden of our guilt.
In our New Testament reading (Matthew 27:11-31) the people say, "His blood is on us and our children" (Matthew 27:25). They could not carry that burden of guilt. Often we also feel that crushing burden of guilt. On the last day, that burden of guilt would crush us completely in the judgment of God.
Praise God that the one who is HOLY TO THE LORD not only served as priest to carry our burden of guilt, but also as the sacrifice to carry that crushing burden of guilt.
As we read of the Old Testament worship and sacrifices in the days ahead, let these descriptions deepen your appreciation of what happened on Good Friday. Jesus bore the guilt of our best moments of worship and our worst moments of rebellion.
Jesus, my great High Priest,
offered his blood and died;
my guilty conscience seeks
no sacrifice beside.
His pow'rful blood did once atone,
and now it pleads before the throne. Amen.
