Daily Devotion - The numbers are increasing!

by Pastor Pete Panitzke on March 26, 2020

It is hard not to focus on the numbers of COVID-19 cases. But in our lesson for today (Acts 3:11-4:12, click here to read) the Holy Spirit is focusing, not on the number of diseased, but on the number who are cured. “Many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about 5000.”

Just as the healing of a lame man gave Peter and John an opportunity to talk about Jesus’ resurrection, may the miracle of love and care for each other that the Spirit is producing in us also provide opportunities for us to share the good news of the ultimate cure: Jesus’ resurrection. “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

In Deuteronomy 2-3 (click here to read), Moses continues to give an historical overview for God’s people so that they remember that the LORD their God has helped them in the past. In parenthetical remarks, Moses even explains how it was the LORD who controlled the destiny of other nations and provided them territory in which to live. What a great reminder to us that the LORD our God, our Savior, continues to control the destiny of the nations!

Prayer

O LORD our God, you acted in power in the past, bringing your people safely through dangers and battles into the promised land. O LORD Jesus, your apostles also testified to your victory over death. Your victory assures us that we too shall enter the Promised Land.

Powerful and gracious God, grant your protection to our families, our nation and our world. COVID-19 continues its march ever closer into our lives. Heal the sick. Comfort the dying. Give strength and wisdom to our health care providers. If it be your will, provide us with a cure to this disease.

Give wisdom to our local, state and national leaders as they respond to both the pandemic and the financial consequences that we are experiencing.

We place all our fears, our worries, our hopes into your powerful hands, through Jesus Christ our risen and victorious Savior. Amen.
