Am I Willing to "Stand in the Gap"? - November 2021

by Pastor Pete Panitzke on November 20, 2021

At the end of today's Old Testament reading (Ezekiel 21-22)  the LORD says he was looking for someone to stand in the gap.

Imagine a city under siege. There is a gap in the wall. It takes people of great courage to "stand in the gap" to defend the city where the defenses are weakest.

The leaders of God's people (note the reference to princes, priests, officials and prophets in Ezekiel 22:23-29) had failed to stand in the gap against the spiritual attacks that came on Jerusalem. Rather than lead the charge for faithful living, they led the charge into sin.

Today we live in a nation filled with greed, sexual immorality, apathy toward God. It infiltrates our hearts and our church. Will the LORD find men and women who have the courage to stand in the gap?

This weekend we will celebrate Christ the King Sunday. Our King has come to stand in the gap. In our New Testament reading (John 11:17-37) we see that our King understands our pain ("Jesus wept" John 11:35) and is not afraid to stand in the gap to defend us from death itself.

Prayer: Mighty King, I confess that I have often failed to stand in the gap. I deserve the sword of punishment to fall upon me as it did upon the ancient Israelites. Thank you, Mighty King, for stepping into the gap, facing the judgment in my place. Now, Mighty King, work powerfully in me that I might have the courage to stand in the gap, fighting the devil's attacks not only for myself, but for my family, my church, my community and my nation. As You have served me, may I serve those around me. Keep me safe in humble, faithful service to you in every thought, word and action today. Amen.
