The Lord’s Prayer: Forgiveness | Matthew 6:12-13; Psalm 51

Jesus tells a parable about a man who owes a great debt to his master but is graciously forgiven. A little bit later, this same man sinfully refuses to forgive someone who owes him a small debt. When the master learns of this lack of grace, he punishes the man severely. Martin Luther says the 5th Petition to the Lord’s Prayer (Forgive us our sins) means….“that our Father in heaven would not look at our sins, or deny our prayer because of them. We are neither worthy of the things for which we pray, nor have we deserved them, but we ask that He would give them all to us by grace, for we daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but punishment.
