Sociologists sometimes divide Christians into two groups: committed Christians and cultural Christians. The former are those active in a congregation, praying regularly, reading Scripture. The latter are those who call themselves Christian, perhaps have some Christian beliefs, yet do not strive to live a Christian life nor be involved at church. Those definitions are interesting, but they really distract from the commitment that matters. There is indeed a devoted commitment at the center of Christianity, but it is not man’s commitment to God, which at times can be lukewarm at best. No, at the heart of Christianity we find God’s devotion, his commitment to us–a commitment so strong that it put God on the cross.
