All we can do is pray
Pastor Pete's Blog
"All we can do is pray." That can be an expression of hopelessness.
"All we can do is pray." Today’s readings assure us that it can also be a powerful confession of faith.
In Matthew 7:1-20, Jesus encourages us to ask, seek and knock in prayer. We never have to worry about praying for the wrong thing. Our Father in heaven knows how to give good gifts, even when we children sometimes ask for a foolish gift. Ask in confidence.
Jesus also reminds us of how easy it is to be led off the narrow way that leads to eternal life. That’s why he warns about false teachers.
It is the concern that his son would be led astray that led Abraham to send his servant to find a god-fearing wife for Isaac in Genesis 24. Notice in this account the power of prayer in the life of Abraham's servant.
All we can do is pray: This account in Genesis 24 can remind us to pray for a godly spouse—for ourselves or our children or our grandchildren or the children among our family and friends. A godly spouse can help a husband or a wife walk in that narrow way to heaven. A godly spouse can help lead children on that narrow way.
Whether it be health issues, or praying for the future of children whom we love, let “All we can do is pray” be a powerful confession of faith.
“If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him.”
