After Jesus ascended into heaven, the apostles preached boldly. By the power of the Holy Spirit, many people became believers in Jesus. In some places, the believers shared everything they had, even selling their possessions in order to give to the poor and needy. Some believers even sold their own land or houses and brought the money to the apostles to give away to those in need. One time, a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, sell a piece of property, but they scheme together to keep some of the money for themselves. They will pretend to give all of the money to the church, but they really won’t. Who’s going to know? Ananias comes to church first, presents the money to Peter and tells him this is the total amount. The Holy Spirit, however, helps Peter to see that Ananias is lying. Peter asks, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” When Ananias heard this, he fell over dead. Three hours later, Ananias’s wife, Sapphira came and told Peter the same lie. When Peter told her she was lying to God, Sapphira fell over dead as well.
