In our Old Testament lesson (find 2 Chronicles 25-26 here), we read of two kings of Judah who both started out well, but ended poorly. In humility, let us pray, “LORD, protect me from myself! Keep me connected to you."
The story of Uzziah (called Azariah in 2 Kings 15) also illustrates the difference between the books of Kings and Chronicles. From 2 Kings, we know that Uzziah had leprosy. The Chronicler adds that the leprosy was God’s judgment on a powerful king who became proud. The Chronicler’s goal is to show how the LORD rewards faithfulness and punishes unfaithfulness.
Attached is a list of the kings of Judah and Israel with dates and the names of the prophets who lived during their reigns. This will help you as you read Old Testament history. I’ve also found the map below helpful to follow Old Testament history. It gives approximate dates for the world powers that threatened God’s people. For example, Syria or Aram is the world power at this time, so an approximate date for our reading today is 800 BC.
Our New Testament lesson (find 1 Timothy 2:8-3:16 here) is Paul’s instructions to Timothy whom he left behind in Ephesus on the third missionary journey. God has given us different roles in the church as he does in the home (compare Ephesians 5:21-27). He holds leaders to a higher standard. God grant us humility as we seek to apply these truths in our lives as God’s children.
