Join Our Live Streams & A Confirmation Prayer

Posted by Pastor Pete Panitzke on

Today’s New Testament lesson (read Ephesians 3 here)  includes a prayer that we can pray for our confirmands and and pray for each other, a prayer that each of us can grasp the greatness of God’s love for us in Christ (Ephesians 3:14-21). The prayer closes with a reminder that God’s power is able to do more than we can imagine.

We see that love and power at work in our Old Testament lesson (read Isaiah 9-10 here). The prophet continues to speak of the Child born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), now adding that this Child will be “Mighty God.” How can this be? “The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.” Your Savior’s love and power combine to accomplish our salvation.

The prophet continues with a call to repentance. Notice the refrain repeated four times: “Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.” The LORD will use Assyria as his club to call the people to repentance.

Isaiah 10 closes with a picture of the advancing Assyrian army. Each village named is a few miles closer to Jerusalem. The advance stops at Nob, just a couple of miles north of Jerusalem where the Assyrian King could have seen the city. God uses the Assyrians to humble his people and call them to repentance, but he will not allow his people to be destroyed. The hope of the Savior still lives, the shoot of which we will read tomorrow.
